Your rights in public

  • You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status, where you were born, or how you entered.
  • Ask: "Am I free to go?" If the answer is yes, walk away calmly.
  • If you are not free to go, you do not have to show identification that reveals your status.

Stay calm and safe

  • Do not run, argue, resist, or lie. Lying about your status or carrying false documents can be used against you.
  • Do not sign anything without a lawyer.
  • You can say: "I want to remain silent" and "I want to speak to a lawyer."
