If you are stopped in a public place
Your rights in public
- You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status, where you were born, or how you entered.
- Ask: "Am I free to go?" If the answer is yes, walk away calmly.
- If you are not free to go, you do not have to show identification that reveals your status.
Stay calm and safe
- Do not run, argue, resist, or lie. Lying about your status or carrying false documents can be used against you.
- Do not sign anything without a lawyer.
- You can say: "I want to remain silent" and "I want to speak to a lawyer."
